Brian A. Falconer, PE Honored – September 13, 2023
October 5, 2023When Brian Falconer first moved to New York City in 1990, he was full of dreams, ambition, and confidence. Having successfully completed his college education—first earning a Bachelor of Science in architectural engineering from the University of Kansas in Lawrence and then a Master of Science in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin—Brian enthusiastically aspired to obtain every commission, design every building, and draw every detail. He set out to become the favorite engineer of every architect, owner, and professional and trade organization and to achieve, in short, every recognition possible.
Edward M. DePaola, PE, M.ASCE, F.SEI Honored – June 9, 2023
October 5, 2023Most people who have worked with Ed DePaola know that he has an affinity for structural engineering. It first manifested in grade school, with his fascination with buildings and bridges, and developed in college, along with his recognition of how critical computers could be. That led him in 1981 to the structural consulting firm now known as Severud Associates, where he rapidly progressed from junior engineer to President and CEO.

October 5, 2023March Madness is underway as people carefully update their brackets. And while most are focused on the NCAA Division I basketball games—the Big Dance—tournaments are almost complete in Divisions II and III. It was a good year for the New York University men’s team, who made it to the first round for the first time in seven years. The season was even better for the women’s squad; the Violets advanced as far as the Elite Eight.

Severud’s Sustainable Concrete Design
November 22, 2022More than a fifth of the way into the 21st century, it is hard to imagine a time when smart phones were not ubiquitous. But in the late 1990s, these now-indispensable devices and their precursors, personal digital assistants, were relatively rare, in use mainly by early adopters and other technophiles. For professionals in the building industry, it might also be difficult to recall that sustainable design and construction was once a new concept. In 1998, the U.S. Green Building Council began evaluating 19 pilot projects in their nascent Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. And yet today, LEED has reached its fourth iteration, with more than 100,000 certified buildings. Severud Associates has contributed to the trend towards green building practices with almost 25 years of developing sustainable concrete design.
